Getting Started

New to TownTopia, the Minecraft village building mod? Start here. This page walks you through your first village, from an empty field to a little town that runs itself. It takes about one in game week if you follow along.

Before you start

  • The mod runs on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge.
  • You get a TownTopia Guide book the first time you join a world. Lost it? Type /villager guide for a new one, or craft one from a book and a log.
  • The Mayor also has a searchable Guide button with all of this in game.

Two ways to get a village

Option 1: find one

Brand new villages that spawn in your world turn into TownTopia villages when you first walk up to them. The old villagers are swapped for this mod's villagers, and the village sets itself up quietly: a Town Hall, a storage room with some food, a few houses, and 4 to 8 villagers with a farmer and a lumberjack among them. There's no chat message, it just works. These villages have a slightly smaller border than one you build yourself.

(Zombie villages, villages that were already loaded before you added the mod, and villages right next to another one stay vanilla.)

Option 2: build your own

This is the fun way, and the rest of this page assumes you're doing it.

Step 1: Build a Town Hall

Build any closed room with a door. It doesn't need to be fancy, a small wooden hut is fine. Just make sure it has walls and a roof all the way round, 2 blocks of headroom inside the door, and a proper floor.

Craft a Town Hall token: 8 logs (any wood) around a crafting table. Place an item frame above or right beside the door and put the token in it.

You'll see Setting up your village in chat, and a few seconds later Your village has been founded! The token starts to glow. Congratulations, you're a village founder.

Step 2: Open the free chest

A chest appears next to the Town Hall door. Inside you'll find 32 bread and five tokens:

  • Storage
  • 2 Bed House
  • Lumberjack
  • Farmer
  • Merchant Stall

Settlers are on their way, and a Mayor moves into the Town Hall.

Step 3: Build a Storage room

Your villagers need somewhere to keep food and supplies. Build another small room, put a few chests inside, and hang the Storage token by its door. Put the bread from the chest in there, that's your villagers' first food. A crafting table inside is a good idea too.

Step 4: Build a house

Build a room with 2 beds in it and hang the 2 Bed House token by the door. Villagers who sleep in beds are a lot happier. You'll want more houses as the village grows.

Step 5: Hand out the first jobs

Hold the Lumberjack token and right click a villager. Do the same with the Farmer token on someone else. The lumberjack gets an axe and heads for the trees. The farmer gets a hoe and some carrots.

Step 6: Make a field

The farmer finds fields by themselves, so just make one: dig a water hole, till a few blocks around it, plant some seeds. They'll take it from there, and even make the field bigger over time. The Farms page explains how to keep it under control.

Step 7: Start making money

Build a Merchant Stall (a room, or just an open spot with a barrel) and hang its token. Then you need a Tradesman to sell your extra stuff to the travelling merchant who visits in the mornings. The merchant comes on each of the first 3 mornings and pays double, so get this going early.

The emeralds you earn are what you spend at the Mayor's shop.

What to build next

There's no right order, but this works well for most people:

  • More houses, so the village can grow and have babies
  • Kitchen and a Cook, because good food keeps everyone happy
  • A Guard or two, before the first raid (around day 8)
  • Mine and Miner, then a Forge and Blacksmith for better tools and armor
  • Tavern and Bard, for happy evenings and guest beds for visitors
  • Then whatever you like: Ranch, School, Library, Barracks, Mage Tower...
