Lumberjack
The lumberjack cuts down trees, takes the wood to your storage, and plants a new sapling where each tree stood. Your village never runs out of wood.
How to get one: buy a Lumberjack Token from the Mayor, then right click a grown-up villager while holding it. They don't need a building. A villager who had no job before gets a wooden axe to start with.
What it does
Chopping trees
- It walks to the closest tree. Two lumberjacks never chop the same tree.
- If leaves are in the way, it cuts through them. It won't break leaves you placed yourself, or fences, walls and doors.
- It doesn't climb. It chops at the bottom, and then the whole tree comes down at once.
- A better axe chops faster. A small oak takes about half a minute with a wooden axe. Levelling up doesn't make it faster, only the axe does.
- If danger comes, it stops. Later it comes back and finishes the same tree.
Bringing the wood home
- The logs go straight into its pockets. You don't have to pick anything up.
- It doesn't get every log. A new lumberjack gets about half of a tree's logs; a level 100 one gets about 9 out of 10.
- Cutting leaves sometimes gives a stick or an apple (apples only come from oak and dark oak). Leaves never give it saplings.
- When its pockets are full, it takes the wood to storage. The more it levels up, the more it can carry first.
Planting new trees
- After a tree comes down, it plants a new sapling of the same kind in the same spot. It doesn't need any saplings: they're free.
- Thick trees (with a trunk 2 blocks wide) get 4 saplings, so they grow back thick.
- If a sapling can't grow on that spot, it skips it.
- Tip: a druid makes the saplings grow back into trees much faster.
Axes
- Thick trees need an iron axe or better (iron, diamond or netherite). These are trees with a trunk 2 blocks wide: dark oak, and big spruce and jungle trees. Any axe works on normal trees.
- It takes the best axe from storage by itself, and swaps it when you put a better one in.
- No axe in storage? It makes a wooden axe itself from 4 logs or planks, at a crafting table in a storage room.
- Axes wear out as it chops. A blacksmith makes new ones before the old one breaks.
- Axes you bring (not made in the village) work, but they wear out faster and their enchantments are weaker. It never uses a diamond or netherite axe that you brought.

Which trees does it cut?
It only cuts real trees. Anything that looks like something you built is left alone, so your houses are safe.
A tree gets cut when
- it's inside your village,
- it stands on dirt or grass,
- it has its own leaves on top (birch leaves on an oak trunk don't count),
- and nothing you built touches the top or bottom of its logs.
A tree is left alone when
- it stands on stone, sand, gravel, planks or anything that isn't dirt,
- something you placed (planks, glass, a torch, leaves…) sits right on top of or right under one of its logs,
- it's right next to one of your buildings,
- a farmer grows cocoa on it,
- or you set that kind of tree to Leave in the settings.
Stripped logs and logs lying on their side are never cut.
Want to keep a tree? Put one block that isn't dirt (stone, for example) under the trunk. Or set that kind of tree to Leave.
Not sure why a tree isn't cut? Look at one of its logs and type /villager treecheck. It tells you if it counts as a tree, and if not, why.
Watch out: if your build is made of the same wood as a tree and touches it, the lumberjack sees them as one thing and leaves the whole tree alone. And if you chop half a tree yourself, the lumberjack won't finish it.
How it decides, step by step
- It looks around. When your village loads, it checks every tree inside it. When a sapling grows into a tree, the lumberjack knows about it right away. Other new trees are found the next time the village loads.
- It finds the bottom. The lowest log of each trunk, standing upright on a block.
- It follows the logs. Every log of the same wood that touches it, even corner to corner. Huge things (taller than 40 blocks, or more than 256 logs) are left alone. A single log isn't a tree.
- It checks for building. Anything you built right above or right below a log means it's a build. Things on the side of a log don't count, so a torch on the side of a trunk won't save it.
- It checks the ground. The trunk has to stand on dirt, grass or something like it (mangrove roots count too).
- It checks the leaves. The top of the trunk needs its own kind of leaves on at least 3 of 5 sides: above, north, south, east and west. That's how it tells a tree from a wooden post.
- It chops. Each leaf goes with the tree it's closest to. Any leaves left over fall apart on their own, like normal.
Trees from other mods work too, as long as the mod names its logs, leaves and saplings the same way Minecraft does.
Settings
Each lumberjack has its own settings. Open its screen and click Settings. This is that screen; try it.
- Trees: for each kind of tree, pick Replant (chop it and plant a new one), Cut only (chop it, plant nothing) or Leave (don't touch it).
- Equipment: which axes it's allowed to use.
- Behaviour: Working turns chopping on or off. Planting turns all planting off at once. Wooden Tool Crafting lets it make its own wooden axe.
Everything is switched on to start with.
Getting better
The more trees it chops, the better it gets. A hard-working lumberjack reaches level 100 in about 80 days. Only the first 11 trees each day count fully, so it can't rush.
| Level | Logs it carries before going to storage | Logs it gets from a tree |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 25 | 16 | about half |
| 26 to 50 | 32 | about 6 in 10 |
| 51 to 75 | 48 | about 7 in 10 |
| 76 to 100 | 64 | 8 to 9 in 10 |
Higher levels also get hungry slower while working. Levels never make it chop faster: that's the axe. How levels work for every job is on the Jobs page.
